Julia, a friend of mine, knows the effects anger can have on a family all too well.
For years she grew up in a household where her brother would fly in a rage of anger over
simplest things. One day she had the pleasure of talking to a music therapist who had
been studying the benefits healing music has in helping with anger management.
Julia decided to approach her brother, to voice her concerns about the quality of life
he wouldn’t have if he continued down this destructive path. When she first brought it up
to him he became irritated to the fact she was meddling in his life. She could see the signs
of trouble so she decided to end the conversation.
Frustrated she returned to the music therapist to discuss her dilemma. The therapist gave her
a strategy to try which gave Julia a renewed hope that she had a chance to help her brother
see the error of his ways.
15 minutes prior to approaching her brother she picked a room and started to play relaxing
music which the therapist had given to her to try. After the music had been playing for a few
minutes she decided to invite her brother in for a friendly talk. At first he was reluctant but
after talking to him about things which were of interest to him, he accepted her invitation. At some
point the conversation changed to discuss his anger issues.
At first he became agitated but soon calmed down, Julia was shocked as to how fast he calmed down
and suddenly found him to be engaging in the conversation with a sense of calm.
After 10 minutes he realized, more than ever before, how his angry outbursts have caused stress
on his family and if he continued down this path it would destroy his family relations. He wept
for over an hour, the emotions of such an effect were overwhelming.
He vowed to never let his anger control his life again. Later that week he sought the help of an
anger management therapist – he mentioned how the relaxation music had helped him to remain calm.
The therapist contacted the Healing Music Therapist and together they created a strategy that
changed Julia’s brothers life forever. Within six months he was a changed man – he was 21 at the
time and today at the age of 32 he enjoys a life filled with joy and love with his wife and two
young children, Kevin and Brittany.
