Music is medicine for our souls and just as a gourmet recipe is written, music can be organized into musical prescriptions to cure a variety of disorders.
Music Therapy is not as simple as taking a CD, playing it and magically your cured. There are many disciplines involved in the study of the effects of music on the listener. Cognitive theory studies how music is perceived by the listener and how cognitive schemata (basic element of thinking) are activated when listening to music.
By itself music will not be considered medicine, even though a type of music called “Healing Music” can be soothing and provide many positive side effects which contribute to a better quality of life. For the person with very minor ailments healing music has been sufficient and its side effects have been very motivating.
If you consider yourself to have minor ailments you could experience such benefits as:
- Lower blood pressure to a healthy level
- Lower stress hormones
- Improvement in mood
- Weight loss
These are only a few benefits which you could experience, there are many more benefits to healing music.
If you are currently taking a medical prescription should you replace this medicine with music?
Most of you know the answer should be “No” to this question but sometimes minor ailments are typically controlled with medicine when it is not always necessary. Stress may cause your condition to worsen therefore by listening to Healing Music this could in fact reduce your stress thus causing you to be able to lessen your intake of medication. With the guidance of a music therapist and direction from your family doctor, you could put this plan into action.
Why not add a music prescription along with your medical prescription?
The intention of this writing is to provide education on the theory that music brings many health benefits.
Adding a music prescription to your current health plan is intended as a supplement not a replacement to your current medical prescription. Do not take this writing as advice on replacing medical prescriptions with music.
Music therapy can add quality to your current health program in so many ways. As a music therapist it is your job to ensure the proper music prescription is implemented which is made possible in part by the feedback of the patient. You need to understand their music interests.
